iPod foils potential kidnapping attempt in the hands of quick-thinking child

Apple's iPod touch can't make cellular calls -- at least, not without a special case -- but it did look enough like the similar iPhone to foil one would-be predator. A Delaware suspect asked a 12-year-old girl to get into his van in front of her middle school, but quickly fled the scene, when the girl reportedly put her iPod against her ear and told him she was dialing police. The local authorities did eventually get called and are still looking for the suspect. If you see a "white male, 35-45 years of age, with a dark crew cut styled hair" suspiciously eying the headphone jack placement on devices in your local Apple Store, perhaps you'd best stay away.

HTC reports record fourth quarter with $3.3 billion in sales

 HTC

HTC has perhaps been the single largest OEM supporter of Android since Google launched the OS. Remember, the G1, Hero, Nexus 1, Droid Incredible, Desire, and Evo 4G (and many, many more phones) were all made by the Taiwanese company and were largely considered the best Android phones on the market when each launched. The company just released their numbers for Q4 and to say they are impressive is an understatement. The company raked in north of $3.3 billion in sales, units shipped doubled year-over-year to 9 million, and total units shipped doubled from last year to 24.5 million. The places the company in close competition with Samsung as the fourth-largest global smartphone manufacturer behind Nokia, RIM, and Apple.

HTC has attributed most of this growth to the exploding demand for Android smartphones, and expects this trend to continue. HTC plans to cover their bases by strongly supporting Windows Phone 7 as well. The HD 7, in particular, looks like a great device for WP7 users as it is more or less an Evo sans Android. Our Government Can?t Prevent A Digital 9-11: Entrepreneurs Need To Step In

At the Security Innovation Network (SINET) Showcase at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C., this week, Michael Chertoff, former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, presented a dire assessment of the cyber-security threat facing our nation. He discussed how rogue governments and hackers are quietly infiltrating our computer systems and the disasters that can be perpetuated?like those you see on the TV show ?24?. Chertoff worries that these risks haven?t yet gripped the public imagination; that it may take a ?digital 9-11? to get businesses, consumers, and governments to fortify their defenses. The most troublesome thing I learned by talking with a who?s who of our nation?s security community was that our government doesn?t believe it has the ability to defend us from the rapidly evolving threats. Yes, the National Security Agency and some branches of government have brilliant computer scientists working for them and can defend their own systems; but the rest of us are our own. The Government simply can?t innovate fast enough to keep pace with the pervasive threats and dynamics of the internet or Silicon Valley?s rapidly changing technologies. Indeed, as George Hoyem, a partner at the CIA-backed venture fund In-Q-Tel, noted, there has been a 571 percent growth in malware since 2006; today, 60 percent of all websites are infected.

Viewsonic introduces 3DV5 3D pocket camcorder, no glasses required

There's a good chance this 3D bandwagon may never stop rolling, so rather than maintaining that bitter beer face for yet another day, you may as well embrace the next dimension. Viewsonic's newest pocket camcorder just so happens to fit into that segment, as the 3DV5 is a 720p shooter with a 2.4-inch autosterescopic display, not dislike that found on Nintendo's 3DS. According to the company, there's a one-touch function to switch between 2D and 3D recording modes, and once they've logged the latter, they can either plug it directly into a 3D HDTV (via HDMI) or watch it on-screen without any 3D glasses. Users can also throw these up on YouTube's 3D channel if they'd rather rather with a set of anaglyph spectacles, but you'd probably budget for an SD card -- you know, considering that the 10MB of internal storage space won't exactly hold a masterpiece. Is this guy really worth £150 ($238)? Can you really live another day without the ability to create 3D content?

Robot Wants Ice Cream is a fun retro platformer -- Time-Waster

robotwantsicecream

Robot Wants Ice Cream does not actually have ice cream. At least not as far as I was able to tell.

What it does have is a robot. Well, to be exact, it has a robot, a dog, a ton of bad guys, 8-bit music, and bosses that you have to beat. You can tell when you're facing a boss because it's huge, and the music gets all "Bowser" when one of them shows up. There are also bonuses that make you jump higher, shoot faster, and generally become a more awesome, ice cream-loving robot.

Most importantly, there are lots and lots of save points, and if you die, you instantly reincarnate. You don't even lose your bonuses!

As far as time-wasters go, this isn't a quick one. It leans more towards the "addictive" side of the scale. If you have any sort of affinity for 8-bit graphics, robots, and cute puppies, you really should give it a spin.

AOC goes ultraslim with new sixpack of LED-backlit monitors

Tired of looking at the same, aged, lifeless pixels day-in and day-out? Now you've a way to change it. AOC has just unveiled its latest range of LCD monitors, and the whole lot is seductively thin. Measuring just 12.9 millimeters on the depth chart, this sixpack ranges from 18.5- to 23-inches and offers up a 16:9 widescreen viewing angle. Unfortunately, screen resolutions are being kept secret (we're crossing our fingers for 1080p across the board), but we are told to expect VGA / DVI inputs, a flexible base, five millisecond response times and a laughable dynamic contrast ration of 50,000,000:1. Mum's also the word on pricing, but look, at least you've got a lovely selection of high resolution images to gawk at below.
